When the Coach Is Being Coached

As a physiotherapist, coach, Pilates and yoga instructor, I have spent much of my life supporting other people.

I help them understand their bodies, recognise their strengths and find a way forward when life—or their health—has not gone according to plan.

But even a coach needs to be coached.

Recently, I found a life coach who has transformed the way I think about myself, my work and what is possible for my future.

She doesn’t simply tell me what I want to hear. She isn’t nice for the sake of being nice, and she doesn’t allow me to hide behind excuses, doubt or the stories I have become comfortable telling myself.

She challenges me—with honesty, compassion and purpose.

She has my back, but she also drives me to achieve more.

More in life.

More in my work.

More at home.

And, perhaps most importantly, more of me.

Not a busier version of me. Not a version who keeps pushing until there is nothing left to give. Not the version who tries to be everything to everyone.

The real me.

The soulful me.

The woman underneath all the roles, responsibilities, health challenges and expectations.

Her coaching has helped me recognise my own potential in a new way. She sees what I am capable of, even when I cannot quite see it for myself. She holds me accountable for the dreams and goals I say matter to me, and she reminds me that creating change requires more than simply thinking about it.

It requires action.

Having someone hold me accountable has been incredibly powerful. It is much easier to postpone something when nobody else knows you intended to do it. A good coach notices when you are hesitating. She asks the questions you may have been avoiding and helps you understand what is genuinely holding you back.

Sometimes, we need encouragement.

Sometimes, we need reassurance.

And sometimes, we need someone to lovingly call us out.

That is what she does for me.

What I appreciate most is that she understands that achieving more does not always mean pushing harder. My body has experienced major surgeries, pain, recovery and change. I have learned so much about listening to it over the years, but this coaching relationship is helping me deepen that understanding even further.

I am learning how to work with my body, not against it.

I am learning when to move forward, when to pause and when fear is disguising itself as a physical limitation.

I am learning that progress does not need to happen all at once. It can be built gently, consistently and intentionally—day by day.

This experience has also reminded me what meaningful support really looks like.

It is not about rescuing someone or doing the work for them. It is about standing beside them while encouraging them to take ownership of their next step. It is seeing their potential without ignoring their reality. It is offering kindness without removing accountability.

That is the kind of coach I want in my corner—and the kind of coach I continue to strive to be for others.

Being coached has helped me reconnect with my own vision for Free-Your-Time. It has encouraged me to think bigger, trust myself more deeply and stop making myself smaller to fit within what feels comfortable or expected.

I am beginning to understand that wanting more does not mean I am ungrateful for the life I already have.

I can be deeply grateful and still want to grow.

I can appreciate how far I have come and still be excited about where I am going.

I can care for my body and still challenge myself.

I can support everyone around me without completely losing sight of myself.

The journey is ongoing. There will always be more to learn, more layers to uncover and more opportunities to grow. But I now feel clearer, more supported and more accountable for creating the life I know is possible.

I will be forever grateful to this incredible lady.

For seeing me.

For believing in me.

For challenging me.

For having my back without allowing me to stay exactly where I am.

And for helping me discover more of my potential, more of my purpose and more of the real me.

Because sometimes, the coach needs coaching too.

And sometimes, allowing ourselves to be supported is the very thing that helps us step fully into who we are becoming.
